200m Pounds Worth of Carpet Exhibited in Dubai

Dubai is known as the modern epicenter for all things expensive. From lavish high-rise apartments to the latest supercar, you can find it all in Dubai. Now, Dubai has hosted one of the largest congregations of luxury carpets in the world. These carpets together have been valued at over £200 million!

Dubai is currently acting host to more than 15,000 carpets at the 24th Carpet and Art Oasis. This event, taking place at City walk is currently on until the 14th February. We check out some of the amazing things on offer in this huge collection.

The Carpet Oasis is a relatively small part of the annual Dubai Shopping Festival. This event is organised by Dubai Customs and, after its opening on Sunday is set to attract thousands of tourists through it’s doors.

Farida Fadhil, head of Carpet & Art Oasis organising committee, told Gulf News that aim of the carpet event is to highlight Dubai not only as a hub for international digital and financial business, but as a hub for carpet trade. It also allows for a new generation to be education in the art of carpet weaving.

Carpets have been collated from around the world.  Many of these handmade carpets have been brought from countries including Afghanistan, Turkey and Iran. These range from traditional and detailed silk design to patchwork wool. This is intended to demonstrated the diverse range of quality carpets that is created in the Arabic and Islamic heritage.

The Exhibition is acting host to some 15 local companies. Additionally, the show includes a number of first-time exhibitors from Turkmenistan.

Under the theme of “Mix of art and innovation”, the Sultan Bin Sulayem (DP World Group Chairman and CEO and chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation) held the event under his patronage to encourage this.

“This year’s theme was chosen to emphasise innovative techniques of weaving carpets and to present entrepreneurs with a great opportunity for investment,” said Fadhil.

She said the event gives the 27 Emirati women involved in the management and creation of the event the chance to learn the art of weaving, with the aim of developing a new skill that opens new opportunities.

Exhibitors

Mahmood Ahmad, an exhibitor from Iran, said the time needed to complete a handcrafted silk carpet depends on the size and quality.

“Heritage carpets can be as large as 3.5 metres by 5 metres and can take up to 10 years to complete as they have very fine details,” he said.

Another exhibitor Dextor Inay who is displaying silk and wool carpets from Turkey and Iran, said modern designs are also made to look somewhat classic.

“The time it takes to complete a carpet depends on the number of knots in one square metre. For example, it would take a minimum of six months to complete a carpet, which is 1.60 metres by 2.30 metres,” he explained. The exhibition also includes a wall mural following the theme ‘Year of Tolerance’ that highlights the role of the UAE as a place of peaceful co-existence.
