About Chorley
Chorley is a town in Lancashire, located roughly 20 miles North West of Manchester, with a population of roughly 34,000 people. Nearby areas include Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan and Preston.
History
The history of Chorley saw a significant contribution to the cotton and mining industry, as well as it’s role during the Second World War. Like most towns in Lancashire, Chorley attained the majority of its wealth in the cotton industry during the industrial revolution. Chorley was, in fact, one of the main cotton towns with a skyline dominated with mills in the surrounding areas. This was until they were demolished between the 1950’s and 2000’s.
Remains of the industrial past include numerous chimneys, mills and Victorian terraced work houses which homed local workers. Today, very few mills remain with the last manufacturing mill stop producing textiles in 2009.
Located on the edge of Lancashire Coalfield, Chorley was also a vital location for coal mining. Duxbury Woods, the Gillibrand area and Coppull were once home to mining pits which gave thousands of jobs to locals during this time. The Chisnall Hall Colliery was the biggest Lancashire pit outside of Wigan along with other pits located in the Chorley suburb. The last working pit was located south of Chorley, the Ellberbeck Colliery, which closed in 1987. Chorley was also home to the Royal Ordnance Factory, which was a large munitions manufacturer in Euxton.
